The Chambre Orientale

A DREAM OF THE ORIENT
Refinement, comfort, and heritage

Dream while awake!

The Orient fascinates the West! Men and women of the early 20th century were immersed in the colonial era. Pierre Juppet built a minaret at Bagatelle; the stained glass of the staircase takes us to Egypt, and the paintings to Constantinople or Venice.

Your room: 30 m2, facing south and west with an Art Deco-inspired bathroom.

The Oriental room is heady, in red, beige, and gold. The jacquard-stretched walls play with the old pink silk brocade curtains; the woodwork is painted with linseed oil. Come and relax, lulled by the rustling of trees and the reflections of the sun on the polished brass. Solid oak herringbone parquet waxed with beeswax, a red and gray marble fireplace with brass trim, frosted glass windows, views of the plane tree terrace to the south and the lime tree grove and green carpet to the west—you're in what was Monsieur's room, Pierre Juppet, the house's builder.

Villa Bagatelle, listed as a Historic Monument, is one of the very first Hotel-Museums. It has been undergoing restoration for three years to regain its 1900 charm and vibrancy. As many elements as possible have been repaired, upcycled, or sometimes rebuilt, using materials and techniques as close to the originals as possible.

The bedding:
A majestic double bed 170 x 210 cm.
This is a family bed, specially made around 1905 for Bernadette's great-grandparents. Joseph was particularly tall and must have loved comfort. The bed, decorated with carved pansy flowers, is inspired by Louis XV style, reflecting the traditional bourgeois aspirations of the time, for whom the 18th century was a sure reference for good taste.

Furniture and decoration:
Your room is furnished with authentic pieces from the late 19th or early 20th century: Iranian copper lamp, Turkish ceremonial shield, Syrian table, Black Madonna from Puy, pastel portrait.

Your bathroom, facing west.

The Art Deco-inspired bathroom is tiled with handcrafted Zelliges. It features a bathtub/shower. The "Porcher" sink and faucets, installed in the 1930s by Paulette and Robert, are identical to those on the Normandie ocean liner. The afternoon sun streams in through the large French door.

Separate toilet and washbasin.

Your south-facing view of the plane tree terrace.

"Paulette & Robert" Breakfast.

Every morning, a traditional breakfast is served in a ground floor lounge:
assortment of baguettes, pastries, butter, and jams, hot drinks (Italian or French coffee, various teas, Van Houten chocolate), fruit juice, fruits, and cereals.

Living at Bagatelle

We have taken the challenge of immersing you in a 1900-1920 universe. As many elements as possible are original, sometimes reconstructed with materials and techniques close to the originals: reuse of old parquet floors, beeswax finish, linseed oil-painted woodwork, antique curtains sourced from vintage shops, museum-quality furniture. The original sanitaryware and faucets have been restored. These objects and materials are often no longer part of our daily lives. Coming to Bagatelle for a few nights means being open to surprises and ready to relearn the habits, gestures, and attentions of our grandparents.

FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION

We kindly ask you to pay particular attention to:
DO NOT WET THE PARQUET IN THE ROOM
by walking with wet feet after leaving the bathroom.
DO NOT WET THE HEADBOARD
with damp hair or wrapped in a bath towel turban.
Water removes wax and damages the wood's finish, which will need to be repolished or restored.
DO NOT PLACE WET OR ICED GLASSES ON THE TABLES.
