French culture

Immerse yourself in the early twentieth century Lyon. Bagatelle is a charming getaway 15 minutes away from the Place Bellecour or Lyon-Perrache train station  .

The holiday home of Pierre Juppet, son of a shoemaker from Lyon, and "inventor" of the aperitif Saint Raphaël.

The Grande Maison de la Villa Bagatelle is the main building of the property. Holiday home of Pierre and Marie-Magdeleine Juppet in the Lyon region of, it is surrounded by many outbuildings around a courtyard which allow Bagatelle to live in a dream of autonomy: stables, kennels, barnyard, hutches, garages, workshops, orangery and heated greenhouse as well as the caretaker’s house.. There is also a billiard room and the accommodation of Pierre’s father and uncle. The park, all facades and roofs are all protected structures which are included in the Additional Inventory of Historical Monuments; the Great House is also listed as a whole, inside and outside. Bagatelle is first and foremost the family home of Bernadette and Matthieu. They welcome their children, grandchildren, cousins and friends; you may have the opportunity to meet them.

Furniture and design:

Your room is furnished with beautiful and authentic pieces coming from the best workshops of early 20th Century creators who invented Art Nouveau. These pieces alone justify the Museum Hotel concept.

The interior design

The architect Pierre Curieux who designed the house by choosing the eclectic style. It is a characteristic movement of the late 19th century which seeks to take the best of each decorative style to organize a form of quintessential and encyclopaedic good taste. Throughout the pieces, various inspirations follow each other from Louis XV influence to colonial orientalism and Art Nouveau. The latter came to maturity and became better known by the general public with the Parisian metro stations of Hector Guimard set up in 1900, at the time when the construction of Bagatelle just began.

Le hall d'entrée et l'escalier

The entrance hall is designed as an interior courtyard with its pink stucco architecture, its painted sky crossed by birds and the mosaic paving which is very characteristic of of early 20th century villas. The staircase leads to your room and the guest lounge is on the left, facing the garden.

L'escalier vu du haut

The grand staircase is one of the masterpiece in the house; like the hall, it simulates an exterior architecture with a painting that evokes Constantinople and the stained glass window which us all the way to the banks of the Nile.
Once you leave your room, it is down this way for your breakfast.

Breakfast is served on the ground floor: this very room was originally used as a smoking room for Pierre Juppet and after, it was an office to Robert, Yves and Matthieu Chauvin.
During the Second World War, it was the only room heated by a fireplace where a woodfire burned all day.

A lounge is dedicated to guests with some evenings wood fire in the fireplace.

Dining for lunch or dinner:

The famous Bouchons and gastronomic restaurants of Lyon are less than 20 minutes from the Villa. If you wish, we can recommend the best options based on your preferences. Additionally, many restaurants, guinguettes, terraces, or fast-food places are close to Bagatelle.

If you wish to have lunch or dinner at the Grande Maison, you may order a catered meal at least 8 hours in advance, which will be served in the ground-floor Salon.
Lastly, for last-minute cravings, we offerColm Meat and Cheese platters with an assortment of fresh bread and a bottle of wine.

Living in Bagatelle

We have made the bet to immerse you into a universe of the 1900-1920 era. Most of the items have been repaired, recycled, sometimes rebuilt to be as close as possible to the original materials and techniques: re-use of old parquet floors, beeswax finish, linseed oil painting of woodwork, antique curtains, Museum quality furniture. The original sanitary ware and faucets have been restored. These objects and materials are often from our daily lives. Coming to Bagatelle for a few nights means being surprised and ready to re-learn the attitudes, gestures and attentions of our grandparents.
